A while back, an AI-generated image of a total solar eclipse took the internet by storm. The image is stunning and although it’s not an actual photograph, most of us have witnessed the remarkable phenomenon of a solar eclipse. But what is a solar eclipse and what makes a total solar eclipse possible?Â
What Causes a Solar Eclipse?
The answer to that question involves a very simple, but astonishing, mathematical fact. Yikes! Did I say the dreaded “math” word? Before you roll your eyes or click to close this tab, just read the next sentence, because it’s fascinating. A solar eclipse occurs because it just so happens that our Sun is roughly 400 times larger than our Moon AND 400 times more distant from the Earth. Is this a coincidence? I think not. The Bible tells us in Psalm 19 that, “The heavens declare the glory of God.”Â

Consider the soul-searching words of King David when he wrote in Psalm 8,
“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
    the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
    and the son of man that you care for him?”
Not only did God create the heavens and earth and everything in between, but He also created us. You and me. And because every soul is created in God’s own image, every soul is breathtakingly beautiful in His sight.Â
