Sunset in Aptos, CA.

Friends, as we enter a new year, I’d like to try something new. From time to time, in place of formal devotionals, I thought I’d share some personal writings from my journal. It might include a poem or a prayer, or something else God places on my heart. The material will often be raw and unedited as I share the inner thoughts of my heart. Below is a journal entry and poem I wrote recently during an afternoon praying at the beach. The picture above is one I took of the glorious sunset God painted that day.

Journal Entry, December 26, 2014:

Oh Lord, how my heart has ached for you, to spend time with you at the ocean where I feel closest to You, my God. We’ve not journeyed here for almost six weeks and my soul longs for you. Thank you for this day – the beauty of the ocean, the Presence of Your Love, and the freedom to worship you here where I sense Your Presence so intimately.

IN HIS PRESENCE                     by Shadia Hrichi

Mighty waves –
gentle enough to soothe the weary soul.
Oh, to drink the depths of Your love –
to know the vastness of Your Presence.
You are always with me –
a river that overflows
with a peace no human heart can fully grasp.
I cling to You, my God and my Savior –
for Your mighty power sustains me
and Your gentle waters refresh me.
If I could count the ocean’s tears,
would they do justice to the depths of Your love
for a dying world drowning in sorrows?
For the world knows You not.
Yet the ocean, in all its caverns filled
cannot compare to a single drop of Your blood
which purchased lost sinners and rescued them from the deep –
from deep waters where there was no one to help.
You ransomed my heart from a pool of sorrows –
for that was Your good pleasure.
You command the waters, “be still,” and You calm my aching heart
as violence and fear flee from me.
You alone command the seas and set their boundaries.
You bind the enemy and make a decree, “you shall not cross,”
and he must obey.
For Your Word is Power-
You have power to give
and power to take away.
For all the world belongs to You –
the earth and everything in it is Yours.
Praise Your Name!

“Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths.
Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long.” (Psalm 25:4-5 NIV)

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I wish you a blessed New Year and a renewed sense of hope for our Lord’s return. Please leave your comments below. I’d love to hear from you! (If you liked this post, you may also like these poems: Heaven’s Tears or Before Me, You.)
