The movie The DropBox was powerfully moving. I had heard of Pastor Lee’s story a little over a year ago and was deeply touched to hear how God had so impassioned His servant for abandoned children. What I didn’t realize until I saw the movie was what first inspired Pastor Lee to begin the work God gave him to do and second, how many of those he rescued are special needs children. Nevertheless, he views all of the children as a gift from God.
Many of the children are discarded by the parents or birth mother. All too often, they view the disabilities as a burden and a heartbreak. But not Pastor Lee. He sees and embraces every single child as a gift from God. Recognizing that each child has a unique purpose. Beginning with his own son. His son was also born with severe disabilities. Pastor Lee and his wife could not even take him home from the hospital until he was 14 years old. His son still requires around the clock care. However, it was this very child that inspired Pastor Lee to build “The Dropbox.” He felt he had to do something after witnessing children being abandoned in alleyways and dying in the cold.
He defends The Dropbox by lamenting that if society were caring for the children, The Dropbox would not be necessary. However, until that happens, he thanks God for every child whom God brings into his care. He sees each one as a treasured gift. One particular child came with numerous disabilities. Doctors believed his life would not be worth living. While the world often discards these children as doomed to failure. Pastor Lee believes God sees something different. Pastor named the child “Victory.”
It serves as a powerful parallel to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul reminds us, “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18 NIV)
In the movie, the children defy all odds as they grow and excel in school. In time, they become more than the world could ever have imagined. Surely this is fueled by the profound and seemingly infinite supply of love of Pastor Lee and his wife. Pastor Lee is determined to ensure every child entrusted to him is infused with these three truths.
- God create each of them with a purpose
- Their lives matter to God
- They can make a difference in the world
What a precious testimony to our Father in Heaven who looked past our most severe disability of all – that is, our sin – to gaze upon who we were created to be. Then, out of His great love, sent His one and only Son who, “for the joy set before him endured the cross, despising its shame.” Because of His sacrifice, He is “bringing many sons to glory.” (Hebrews 12:2, 2:10)
